From an early age growing up in Kwa-Guqa Township, Witbank, Masekela took up singing and playing the piano. Influenced by the film “Young Man with a Horn” at the age of 14, the young South African went to great lengths to learn to play the trumpet later performing in Trevor Huddleston’s, Huddleston Jazz Band. By 1960 Masekela had played in Alfred Herbert’s African Jazz Revue, appeared in the orchestra for the musical “King Kong”, and performed with the Jazz Epistles alongside Abdullah Ibrahim, Makaya Ntshoko, and Gwanga. After studying at Manhattan’s Royal Academy for Music, the trumpeter and flugelhornist’s career generated a great deal of momentum, aided by his debut full-length “Trumpet Africaine” in 1962. Masekela subsequently moved to California and released the chart-topping instrumental “Grazing in the Grass”, which went on to win the Grammy for Best Contemporary Pop Performance - Instrumental. The same year the musician sold-out venues across the U.S. Including Carnegie Hall in New York, before collaborating with Monk Montgomery & the Crusaders in the early ‘70s.

The expert musician released his 33rd album, “Sixty”, in the year 2000, followed one year after with the compilation “Grazing in the Grass: The Best of Huge Masekela”. The records “Time”, “Hope”, “Still Grazing”, “Revival”, “Almost Like Being in Jazz”, all arrived later into the new millennium before Masekela recorded the live album ”Live at the Market Theatre” in 2007.
